Stryker Corporation is paying $172 million to buy surgical room equipment manufacturer Berchtold Holding AG, despite facing lawsuits for its hip replacement devices. Berchtold makes surgical equipment such as tables, booms and lighting.
Stryker is facing several hip replacement lawsuits after issuing a recall for two of its metal-on-metal hip replacements, the Stryker Rejuvenate and the Stryker ABG II. The Rejuvenate and ABG II hip implant recall are two of several carried out by companies whose hip devices have come under scrutiny for higher than normal rates of failure.
Patients who received a Stryker hip replacement system have complained of severe Rejuvenate and ABG II side effects, including premature loosening of the hip implant, tissue damage and toxic levels of metal in the blood stream. Many of the patients have been forced to undergo revision surgery after the hip replacements failed and caused serious injuries.
